William Roger was a man of science who had earned his name in research methods, natural philosophy, and chemistry. He had served 18 years at the University of Virginia, but now he wanted to build a place that could revolutionize the field of science.
William Rogers believes that the United States needs an educational institute where science is presented as a practical thing and technological innovations are common in the country. Basically, his father was an Irish immigrant, Patrick Rogers, and a professor of Physics and Chemistry at the College of William and Mary; that’s why most of Rogers’ ideas were inspired by his father and the European scientific revolution.
However, in 1861, his dream came true when he found himself inaugurating the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. William Rogers played a key role in building the institute, and later, he served as the president of the educational building from 1862 to 1870, but because of calamities, he could not continue and left the institute in the hands of John Daniel Runkle, a strong advocate of practical science.
